"Did it involve a pair of handcuffs and a ripe tomato?"

Chaos in the land of Mel.

Show opened this week. It's fantastic. I'm uber-proud of this: more so than anything I've done since college. The director was one of my all-time favorites, and that along with the play itself, a great role, and a wonderful group of people to work with made this one of my greatest theatrical experiences thus far. And we still have three weeks! The audience at the matinee today was lame - smallish and all old ladies - but every other crowd's been good. It's so much fun to make people laugh! I feel so good onstage - and I feel like the audience is really on my character's side. She's a sweet one, very likeable though flawed of course, and I've just never felt quite so supported as I do in this show. Nifty.

So good news and bad news on the Jeremy front: 1) He's doing TIC (the children's theater tour) with us! Yay! I think I'm more excited about it than he is, but I guess it's cause the money's not that spectacular...I think it'll be great, and personally I'd almost always rather get paid to perform than do anything else. I understand where he's coming from though - and he'd already resigned himself to the fact that he wasn't gonna do it, and then - surprise! 2) His grandpa passed away today. He'll be heading down to NC tomorrow for the funeral (unfortunately, rehearsals start this week and he'll miss a couple days - but we work with the most compassionate and understanding and accomodating people in the UNIVERSE, I think, so it'll be OK). It wasn't unexpected, but that doesn't mean it's any less painful. I feel bad for him. Having never lost anyone very close to me (Great Aunt Myrtle when she was 103, and my step-grandpa a couple years ago, but...), it's hard to know what to do, or how he must feel. I'm generally good at listening but not too adept at comforting people - it's something I wish I had better instincts for. I'll just try to be here for whatever he may need from me.

I've been a cooking fool these days - using the Moosewood cookbook and not doing half bad! It's quite satisfying, and I've begun to discover some interesting uses for eggplant. Speaking of which, I'm freaking hungry!!
