prev # Monday, Dec. 01, 2003 10:56 p.m. # next Hot tubs for peaceThis afternoon (I was going to say "tonight", but although it was ALREADY DARK it was only about 5:30pm- grrr I hate winter) I had the priviledge of hanging out in a hot tub for about half an hour. It. was. amazing. I don't get to do that very often, and I don't think it's ever been this relaxing. I felt completely drunk afterwards, and the world was a beautiful place. I totally needed it. Jerry, one of my fellow actors, has a hot tub in his backyard, and was in New York for the day (taking a boy scout troop to the UN, no less!) - so he invited us (Andy, Will, and I) to partake of its glory. Ahhhhhhhhhhh.....There was a light dusting of snow on the ground, and as we were in there the stars came out, but getting out wasn't bad at all. I was sooooooo happy. Will said that we should use that $87 billion to buy everyone a hot tub - I agreed that that would certainly make the world a better place (at least it'd do more toward that end than those motherfuckers have been doing so far!!!!)...... Speaking of our stupid government (as I do too often these days), I had a comforting experience tonight, post-hot tub. I went to the grocery store to use my $70 of food stamps - yippee!! gotta love public assistance - and as I was headed for my car with a cart o' food, I saw a middle-aged woman eyeing my uber-liberal bumper stickers. (For those just joining us, they are: "Bush/Cheney 1984: War is Peace", "Power to the Peaceful!", and "If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention") I've been harassed (mildly) for them before - Bloomsburg is a small town, and pretty conservative as they go - so I went about my business, hoping she didn't feel like being nasty. As I loaded up my car (broccoli and hummus and fish - oh my!), she said from outside her SUV, "I was reading your bumper stickers....." (oh great here it comes) "....and I agree." (YAY!) We chatted briefly, I said I was glad to hear it, since I never know what people will say to me. She said, "I am outraged, but unfortunately I think a lot of people aren't." That was about it, but it was just nice to be surprised - I'd had her pegged for an average small-town conservative Pennsylvania Republican, but I was wrong. That, along with the sweet old guy in Cooke City, Montana (of all places) who agreed with my politics and felt like telling me, gives me hope. And the fact that Michael Moore's newest book was #1 for quite awhile (haven't heard anything lately, but I know it was doing really well). Is there hope? Maybe.... |
